Large Scale Reinvention: University of Amsterdam

Wednesday 22 April, 8.30am-10.00am

Location: Morelands, 5-23 Old Street, EC1V 9HL.

Hear from the architect and client of the University of Amsterdam’s Roeterseiland Campus how the 2014 AJ Retrofit of the Year has remodelled the uncompleted post-war academic campus in the heart of the Dutch capital. AHMM has reinvented two large utilitarian buildings from a previous era by stripping out, slicing open, reconfiguring and recladding them, knitting them back into the city’s fabric. The project has recycled the building’s concrete frame, transformed its envelope and dramatically improved environmental performance. A four-storey canal-spanning section of the building has been removed, restructuring the way the building relates to the wider campus and canal, and bold colours and reconfigured circulation routes have established new relationships with the building’s urban setting. Phase 2 of the project is currently underway.

There will also be an opportunity to discuss with the project team how the project’s approach to technology, design and sustainability can be applied in London.
